about

Raqib Hassan Trio - Live at the Western Front (January 30th, 1994)

Free Improvised music in Boston and New England seems to come as an asterisk to the “well-documented” movements in New York City and Chicago. Aside from recent reissues of World Experience Orchestra’s expansive take on simple hymn-like themes, and the frenetic display of reeds and tiny instruments from the core Phil Musra/Michael Cosmic/Huseyin Ertunc trio, there is a rich history of music, capturing decades of fruitful collaborations, that has yet to be heard. Thankfully, one man served as the great documentarian of the era - Dennis Warren. Warren was born and raised in Boston. He spent his undergraduate years engineering Cecil Taylor’s Antioch College ensemble which left an impression on him of how to organize sound and expression through free improvisation. This led to him picking up the drums and studying under the great Milford Graves at Bennington College in Southern Vermont. By the time Dennis returned to Boston in the mid-’80s, he had been woodshedding for a number of years and was ready to unleash his furious sound on the city. As a lifelong student of percussion, he meticulously documented several of his performances in a wide variety of contexts. As a result, Dennis’ archive of tapes is among the greatest documents of improvised music and unparalleled as far as the New England scene is concerned.
I met Dennis in September of 2022 after corresponding via email for two months. The primary goal of this meeting was to digitize and create an Internet database for his archives, which is still in its natal stage. Though the primary concern was with the hundreds of high-quality DAT tapes in the collection - Dennis has always valued the highest audio quality possible for his recordings - I was most intrigued by a small shelf of cassette tapes that included personal copies of The Marco Eneidi Coalition, Zusaan Kali Fasteau, a dozen copies of Raphe Malik’s 21st Century Texts, and a simple, hand-dubbed Maxell Type II with the title RHT 1/30/1994. The contents of that tape were a revelation, to say the least.
Raqib Hassan, a native Texan, had been in Boston and documented as early as 1975 as part of the horn section on the aforementioned World Experience Orchestra’s eponymous debut. Other than this recording and Robert Ruff’s Shaza-Ra released three years later, Raqib’s indelible mark on Boston is startlingly unavailable commercially. In the early ‘90s, Raqib and Dennis met up playing together in Dennis’ Full Metal Revolutionary Ensemble (FMRJE) along with mainstay bassist Larry Roland who sadly passed away this year. Larry and Raqib had known each other since the 1975 WEO record where Larry provided congas and photography. These three musicians make up the trio on January 30th, 1994 playing Raqib’s compositions with raw propulsion that is out of this world coming from a group of seasoned professionals that had played together for years.
Kalmia Sound Co. is proud to announce the trio as our first release, hopefully of many. We hope the Raqib Hassan Trio brings you as much excitement upon first listen as it does for us, and it only grows with repeat listens.
Kindness to all,
Jami Fischer (Founder)
